Also, while I don’t allow students to use it as a “primary source,” Wikipedia does have a hefty collection of links (under the above title), including a pdf of the full text of the Act, if anyone wants more detail.  I couldn’t find any of the press pix I remember of his big grin as he signed the bill, but it will never leave my cerebral cortex.  

The politics around this (especially his) are especially smarmy–not only did he reneg on his promise to veto this bill if these provisions were not removed (which they were at first but then put back), his assurance that his administration, at least, would not “abuse” these powers is laughable. Even if he held to this, there’s always the next administration (President) and the next and the next–and depending on who wins the upcoming election, we should be preparing for the police state most of us foolishly take for granted “can’t happen here.” 

Of course, if he had vetoed it, the Repubs would have accused him of vetoing pay raises for the military, which were also included in the bill–but as a “lame duck” in his last term of office it wouldn’t have hurt him a bit, and speaking out about it could have been invaluable fuel for ratcheting back many of the “Patriot Act” provisions that had already paved the way for political policing in the U.S. (Have you caught a drone peeking in YOUR bedroom window yet?) 

*Governing system of rulership by coercive military force at the direction of a single executive, in partnership with an economic elite and with the support of the ruled due to fear prompted by economic stress and perceived threat by a particular ethnic or national population.
